It says here to "give your partner a sincere confession"...
That... is being very straightforward, which is keeping with how people were like back in the Golden Age, I'd say.
Finished reading what it says on the back of the card, Selena presses it to her chest and turns to look at you.
Is this your cup of tea, Conductor?
Says Selena with a smile as she tucks a stray lock of hair at her forehead back into place.
I don't find it all that difficult, personally. To me, it's just a different way of telling people what I feel about them.
It's just...
Her voice softens again as she struggles to string her thoughts into words.
I think it'd be a shame if we had to do that out on the street.
I would decorate this place and turn it into a romantic opera.
So we really want to be ready for that.
Say... would you like to do that with me, Conductor?
How about... we find somewhere more quiet?
Ta-da! There you guys are!
Right then, Cathy the robot comes rushing at the two of you, all the while blowing a trumpet and making honking noises along the way.
Yes! I'd love to have both of you at the Grand Theater to serve as stand-in performers!
Pretty please!
Cathy shoves two temporary work permits for the Grand Theater into your hands and runs off again making all sorts of noises.
The Grand Theater... I believe it's on the other side of the street.
Selena holds one of the work permits, deep in thought.
Why don't we take advantage of this opportunity to check things out at the theater, Conductor?
And... we just might be able to do our little daring challenge there.
The two of you arrive at the theater hoping to check things out, only to see a bunch of robots blocking the ticket booth as soon as you enter.
These robots are all here trying to give the event organizers a piece of their minds because the robot theater troupe slated to perform has stood them up.
What nonsense is this?! We want our money back!
We want our money back!
No-show... what a terrible thing to do.
Conductor, we have to help them.
You can count on me.
I'll lead you straight into the story so you're completely immersed.
Now, just trust me and leave everything to me, Conductor.
Seeing the two of you coming to their rescue, the theater staff wastes no time bringing both you and Selena a costume each. After quickly going through your lines backstage, the two of you head up the stage.
Selena decided to go with "The Tempest", which is a simple, accessible opera, so that you—playing the fairy—only have to do as Miranda—the protagonist—says if you ever forget your lines.
The curtain rises as Selena steps forward to the center of the stage and begins singing, accompanied by the mechanoid orchestra.
"Mighty fairy! Have you heard my prayer and cast vengeful storms upon my father's enemies?"
"Come, my servant, answer my call!"
In the story, the Duke of Milan and his daughter Miranda were betrayed and stranded on a deserted island. Twelve years later, their enemy, the King of Naples, sails near the island, and the Duke asks the fairy to summon a tempest with magic to capsize their ship.
However, due to the lack of actors, Selena made a small adaptation, changing the story so that the Duke of Milan's daughter, Miranda, personally carries out this revenge.
You barely remember the script, but you remember that this is where you're supposed to come up the stage to meet Selena.
"But they didn't perish, did they? Please tell me they're all safe."
Hearing footsteps, Selena runs toward you. While the look on her face betrays a hint of nervousness, she handles this part of the story smoothly with her performance.
"Excellent! I see they are scattered across the deserted island, yet unharmed. I'm pleased you heeded my prayer."
"No, fairy. I refuse to be held hostage by hatred and end up becoming what I despise most."
"Even if my body is mired in this quagmire, my soul shall remain pure. Otherwise, I would cease to be myself."
"Princess Miranda kneels before the 'fairy,' sorrowfully clutching her chest as she firmly rejects this suggestion."
Selena carries herself naturally. Rather than simply reciting lines off the script, she appears to have thoroughly studied Princess Miranda and is now acting the character out based on her understanding of it.
Meanwhile, the audience of mechanoids under the stage is completely engrossed, their camera eyes fixed intently on the performance.
"...Because revenge is not my final destination. I must journey toward true freedom!"
Selena's murmuring suddenly stops. She takes the "fairy's" hand and rises to her feet with resolute dignity.
These lines aren't in the script. Did she make an adaption here?
"I refuse to silently wait here any longer, waiting for their belated repentance. I shall become—"
"The swift that beats its wings and flies beyond the storm!"
She raises her right arm high, reaching toward the massive glass dome ceiling. At that moment, the confetti and streamers on stage burst open all at once.
"I see now that this island is not my destiny, and the freedom I seek is not here."
"The suffering fate has imposed upon me, I have long since overcome. No matter how they weep and apologize, I will not grant them a shred of pity."
"Let us board that ship and sail away from this narrow island together. I shall accompany you to the ends of the earth, to every corner the stars have ever gazed upon."
"That is the future we should journey toward together."
Selena gazes joyfully at the blue sky above the glass dome, as if a distant "realm of freedom" truly existed there beyond the island.
Her "performance" continues, her lines having long since departed from the original script.
Princess Miranda has "escaped" the fate written in the script and reached an entirely new ending.
Amidst the shower of glittering confetti, Selena looks profoundly sincere.
And this time, not even death itself can do us apart.
In that moment, it becomes clear to you that Selena is saying these very words to you as herself and not "Princess Miranda".
Taking advantage of a moment when the audience below hasn't noticed, she leans in and whispers something into your ear.
"This performance was meant for you, Conductor... I hope you enjoyed it."
